Riley Blake Designer Blog Hop & Fabric Giveaway

Welcome! Thanks to Riley Blake Fabric for hosting a fun Designer Blog Hop. It gives me the chance to tell you a little more about me and how much I am in love with designing! My passion is taking an idea and a doodle and making it come to life either in fabric, art prints, paper collections, phone cases, patterns, and other products. I pinch myself thinking how lucky I am to do something I love every day!

My new collection, Roots & Wings is just hitting the shelves at your favorite fabric retailers. This vibrant line was a fun one to design.

Here is a little sneak peek into the design process I used to create the main print in Roots & Wings.

This main print started on a little piece of graph paper with a little doodle.

This helps me to figure out the style and placement.

These are two of the main flowers in the collection. I scan or take a picture of my drawings and place them in my digital files in my computer. It is a lot of work and fine tuning to keep the personality of the original drawing. It is fun to look back and see how they either evolve or stay pretty much the same as I drew them first. To see more about my design process visit this Deena’s Creative Corner post.

Also, head on over to the Riley Blake site to see the whole Roots & Wings collection.

You can buy Roots & Wings in my etsy shop.

  1. I just LOVE this new line of yours! There is just something about it that just totally draws me in. I especially love the applique patterns, and in particular that pillow. What a perfect gift that would make for a new mama with a sweet baby girl. My daughter is pregnant right now and we are all hoping for a girl this time. If she were to find out she is having a girl (should find out the first part of December!) then I will be ordering a lot of this for sure. Thanks for the opportunity!

    1. Thank you! I totally get hoping for a girl…I had 3 boys before I got my girl. It didn’t take long for me to fill her room with beautiful things when we got the news. Any grandchild is so exciting I am sure!!

  2. Love this collection! Ian new to quilting and handiwork with fabric, so I don’t have a favorite collection yet–but this is lovely!

  3. I love the appliqué pillow and the Roots & Wings appliqué. My favorite print is the text print, but they are all pretty. Thank you for sharing.

  4. My favorite pattern from your shop is the Typewrite Applique pattern. I’m old enough to remember typewriters! And I love the the Roots and Wings fabric. Thanks for the chance to win!

  5. Roots & Wings by Deena Rutter for Riley Blake Designs, Main Cream is my favorite. It looks like fresh picked flowers from the garden.

  6. My favorite is definetly the Main Cream. (Roots & Wings, SKU C4150, Main Cream) All the fabric are truly beautiful though. Have a wonderful day!

  7. I love this new line – can’t wait to get some! I’m really liking your Squared Away quilt too. Thanks so much for the chance to win. Wish I lived closer to be able to visit your Launch Party – I’m in NJ!! Good Luck 🙂

  8. Very interesting article to show us how you process new designs! A few of my favorite fabrics are Good Life (I love anything with swirls and birds) and Scenic Route (so cute for a little boy’s quilt!). You make beautiful things.

    1. Thank you! I am glad you found it interesting. I really love what I do and love seeing how others create as well! We all have different twists on how we bring our creativity to life!

  9. Roots and Wings Garden Cream is my favorite but they are all lovely. This line is so cute and would make great quilts and pillows for kids!

  10. I really like your Squared Away pattern but I must admit I’m not fond of the dark brown border. Maybe a grey instead? I think the best part of quilting is everyone has their own color loves. I believe what works for you is just great.

    1. I love that about creativity in general, Chris! I love how others take products that I designed and turn them into their own works of creativity.

  11. Roots & Wings! Adorable! I love the triangle quilt! I’ve already checked it out and a new baby blanket is in the works! Thank you thank you! How I wish I was close enough to see everything! I’ll have to live vicariously through blogs!

  12. I LOVE this new collection for several reasons. First, the name, “Roots and Wings” was the theme for our wedding luncheon oh! so long ago. But, the message remains true. “There are two important gifts parents give their children: one is roots, the other is wings.”

But I also really love the vibrant colors and whimsy. I love the main brown print for how the colors pop in contrast, but my favorites are probably the stripes. The movement and universal nature of the stripe really could be used on nearly any project. The colors are splendid. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!

    1. Blushing! Thank you Angi. That is my favorite parenting quote ever. It was fun to slide it into the name of one of my fabric collections.

  13. This color palette is incredible and I love the different scales of the prints in this collection. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at a larger quilt so I think I may have to give this triangle quilt a shot. Hopefully sewing the triangles together won’t be too much of a headache 🙂

  14. I think I found you too late for the fabric giveaway, I would love any of your new patterns, they are all so lovely, the florals especially draw me in, but the graffic ones complement so nicely. When I make a quilt I rarely use plain cottons. I love the combinations and visual treat of patterns combined! I would “marry” brightly patterned fabric if I could!

    1. One more quick comment, thanks for the gorgeous simple quilt pattern. I have been teaching my 11 yr old to quilt, and I think she could handle this pattern on her own. I think she would love to prove to me what she has learned.

  15. no i’ve had it since november 09 no problems yet of any kind, i just save a shit load of money on gas it still rides super smooth even at high speeds, plus diesels are more reliable. mine came with a 5 year warranty for any mechanical or electrical problems too, but absolutely flawless performance so far for everything.

  16. Me thinks Ming be confused… going after the bar that over-served the driver is usually a civil action having little or nothing to do with the City Police… Absent the driver giving a full statement which could be corroborated, not likely anything would happen to any bar in similar circumstances through the criminal system. It is nice to note that urban renewal is still alive and well, though…

  17. Chris,"Why else would DHS need so much ammo, eh?"Only people who are bad at math and who don't shoot much are panicking about that.It works out to fewer rounds per officer per year than I burned at a two-day pistol class last month,

  18. I got my Rangefinder in the mail the other day and read the great article about your work. I wanted to say that you have some really great ideas. Your photos are amazing.

  21. Oh Sharon PLEASE continue next year. I may not have stitched each week but I made a beautiful Samples Notebook that I use for CQ blocks. I’m VERY much a visual learner and flip though the challenge stitches and highlights for ideas for shape, texture and color. Thank you for teaching this conservative beginner gal to think outside the box.

  22. Hmm…Very good – I really should undoubtedly pronounce, impressed along with your internet site. I had no trouble navigating by means of all tabs as well as related info ended up being truly simple to do to access. I lately identified what I hoped for befor…

  25. napsal:Cos myslel tím „one man show“?
